Name: Mr Steffen Schilke MBCS Position: Research Student Research title: Multi-Dimensional-Personalisation for the Online and Offline World Description: Multi-Dimensional-Personalisation (MDP) is an approach to support the (mobile) user to cope with the massive information overflow. The online world as well as the offline world provides a vast array of opportunities and information for the user. The main problem nowadays is to get the right information, at the right time, at the right place, and in the right format. There are the main dimensions time, interest and location, as well as secondary issues, such as bandwidth, format / medium, priority and cost. Besides these dimensions and issues, there are security concerns (e.g. the "Big Brother" factor) which have to be considered. From an examination of existing systems and previous literature, it is clear that such a comprehensive approach has not been taken before. There are usually the two main parameters interest and location used in such existing personalisation systems. The interest based personalisation is usually based upon filtering techniques, such as content filtering, collaborative filtering, content mining, monitoring of the surf behaviour, or by the explicit selection of interest topics by the user for the personalisation or recommendation to the user. In this research, the location based approach will be investigated and extended from only navigating the user to a service or information provider, moving from the pull model towards a push-based approach, based upon the location and interests of the user. As far as the literature research has shown there is no system proposed which really combines these two dimensions in a personalisation engine. Based on this idea, the movement patterns of different users will be analysed with a first prototype to evaluate if this is a feasible approach. In addition to this, classification and recommendation methods, based upon user interest, will be analysed for the use in the MDP project.
